The confiscation of property from the departed Russians as a form of punishment is now being discussed, Pavel Krasheninnikov, head of the State Construction Committee, told reporters. He clarified, however, that this idea cannot be legally supported yet.
“Of course we are against it. Legally, we cannot support this, if it will be some kind of global story, then global amendments are needed, we will consider them,” Mr. Krasheninnikov explained to journalists (quoted from “RIA News”). He added that the necessary amendments, “most likely, are being prepared, probably.”
On the eve of the head of the State Duma Committee on Culture Elena Yampolskaya (“United Russia”) reportedthat a group is being created in the State Duma to study measures against the Russians who have left. In mid-January, State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin offered confiscate property from the “left scoundrels”.
Head of the State Council of Crimea Vladimir Konstantinov suggested deprive citizenship of fellow citizens who left Russia during the military operation in Ukraine. Head of the Constitutional Committee of the Federation Council Andrei Klishas warnedthat such changes are impossible without amendments to the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. Head of the Human Rights Council Valery Fadeev alsosaidthat it is contrary to the Constitution of the country.
