The Russian IT industry lacks approximately 500,000 – 700,000 specialists, declared Maksut Shadayev, head of the Ministry of Digital Development, at a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and members of the government.
“We estimate the shortage of developers at about 500,000-700,000 people, which we need in order to maintain the high pace of development of the industry,” Interfax quotes him as saying.
The need for personnel remains despite the increase in the personnel base, Shadayev added.
In early August, it became known that the Ministry of Digital Development was ready to develop a bill that would provide a deferment from the army for IT specialists with secondary education. The ministry noted that such a request comes from “the largest domestic IT companies” that complain about the shortage of personnel.
According to a government decree approved in March 2022, IT workers who have been working in companies with state accreditation for at least 11 months and have a higher education can receive a deferment from military service. In September, the department presented a list of about 200 IT and related specialties, for which a deferment from the army is provided.
