The head of the IAEA announced plans to visit Russia and Ukraine

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi announced that he plans to visit Russia and Ukraine. He spoke about this after a meeting of the UN Security Council, at which he presented five principles for ensuring safety at the Zaporozhye NPP.
“In view of the new tasks, I plan to go to Kyiv, if they will kindly accept me, as well as to the ZNPP. I also plan to visit Russia,” he told reporters (quote according to RIA Novosti).
Grossi noted that the trip is planned soon. According to him, the observance of the safety principles presented by him will be monitored by the IAEA staff, and it is planned to strengthen their presence at the Zaporizhzhya NPP.

Grossi urged Moscow and Kyiv to abide by these principles, saying that everything possible must be done to minimize the likelihood of a nuclear accident.
Earlier, Grossi said that the shutdown of the Zaporozhye NPP from external power supply on May 22 demonstrated the extreme vulnerability of the nuclear security situation. The head of the IAEA called the situation around the station “playing with fire.”
ZNPP has been under Russian control since the end of February 2022. Since then, the Russian side has reported that the plant and the city of Energodar, where it is located, are subject to regular shelling from Ukraine. In early September last year, an IAEA mission arrived at ZNPP. The organization called for an end to the attacks on the station and the establishment of a safe zone around it.
