The head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen said on Sunday that Italy, which has faced a wave of illegal migrants in recent days, needs help from other EU countries. During her visit to the Italian island of Lampedusa, she stressed that “EU countries must accept on their territory” illegal migrants on the island.
Von der Leyen noted that illegal immigration is a serious challenge that requires a pan-European solution.
In response to the statement by the head of the EC, Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni pointed out that the future of Europe depends on the EU’s ability to find solutions to serious problems.
Over the past few days, almost 9 thousand illegal migrants from Africa have arrived in Lampedusa. The island is located off the coast of Tunisia, and therefore is so attractive for Africans seeking to get to Europe.
