The head of the African Union Commission, Musa Faki, explained the reason for the expulsion of the Israeli delegation from the African summit by the fact that the issue of granting Israel an observer status in the organization would still be discussed by a specially created structure; Israel’s membership in this capacity has now been suspended. The committee that will decide this issue includes the heads of seven states: Algeria, South Africa, Rwanda, DRC, Nigeria, Cameroon, Senegal.
Israeli representatives were led out of the hall by security during the opening ceremony of the summit, which was held in Ethiopia. This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the Times of Israel. Musa Faki announced to the press after the ceremony that the Israeli representative had been withdrawn from the opening of the summit, as the Union “did not invite Israeli officials to the event.”
A year ago, RIA Novosti reported that the African Union suspended Israel’s membership in the organization as an observer.
