Deputies of the New People parliamentary faction held a meeting with the head of the Central Bank, Elvira Nabiullina, and discussed issues of inflation and the key rate. According to the head of the faction, Alexei Nechaev, inflation has become a tax on the poor.
“Prices for individual goods are rising much faster than inflation. First of all, these are products that cannot be replaced by imports: citrus fruits, bananas, cocoa beans. At the same time, inflation gradually stabilized. In these conditions, you can think about lowering the key rate,” said Alexey Nechaev (quoted from RIA Novosti).
Elvira Nabiullina said at the meeting that the key rate may begin to decline in the second half of 2024. She previously said that a gradual reduction in the rate could begin in the second half of the year.
In March, the Central Bank left the key rate at 16% per annum. The decision was made against the backdrop of easing, but still high, inflationary pressure. The regulator clarified that it is premature to judge the further speed of the downward trend in inflation.
