Seven days after Canal+ cut the signal from the channels of the TF1 group (TF1, TMC, LCI, TF1 Séries Films, TFX), La Une counter-attack. The summary procedure aims to recover the two million households, or between 4 and 4.5 million potential viewers, who receive TF1 for free – after buying a card for a few euros anyway – thanks to a satellite dish and TNT Sat. In The Sunday newspaperon September 3, Maxime Saada, the chairman of the executive board of the Canal+ group, argued that, despite the “free” nature of the service, a commercial agreement between the two groups was necessary to satisfy these viewers.
False, therefore retorts TF1. “We have made a long-standing commitment, in writing, to guarantee that there would be no retaliation on our part if these areas received our channels even after our commercial agreement expired”, we explain to the chain. Neither the Audiovisual and Digital Communication Regulatory Authority, which tried to mediate, nor the Ministry of Culture, which called Canal+ at the “sense of responsibility and general interest” were not able to speed up the exit from the crisis.
Loss of 5.4 million potential viewers
Despite months of discussion, the two groups have not managed to agree, Canal + denouncing “unfounded and unreasonable demands” from TF1 – a 50% increase in his compensation. In response, the group led by Gilles Pélisson regretted the deadlock situation and argued that “agreements have been reached in recent years with all operators”. A declaration which prompted Molotov, the Internet distribution service, to invite itself into the debate, Monday, September 5, to support the approach of Canal+ to the detriment of the front page.
