The governor of the Sakhalin region called the statements of the Ukrainian leadership about the Kuril Islands absurd. About this Valery Limarenko wrote in your Telegram channel.
The head of the region stressed that the Kuril Islands are the territory of the Russian Federation. “I have said this many times and I will repeat it again: any disputes about the ownership of the Kuril Islands, calls to violate the integrity of the state are unacceptable. It is especially ridiculous when they come from representatives of Ukraine,” Limarenko said.
He also recalled that the issue of ownership of the Kuril Islands was finally closed in 2020, after a corresponding amendment was made to the Russian Constitution.
The day before, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree
on the recognition of the Kuril Islands as a territory “temporarily occupied by Russia”. He said that in this way Ukraine shows its respect for “the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Japan, including its northern territories.”
The Kuril Islands came under the control of Soviet troops during the war with Japan, in September 1945. On September 8, a peace treaty was signed in San Francisco between Japan and the Allies. According to him, Tokyo renounced the rights to the Kuril Islands and territories, the rights to which it acquired under the Portsmouth Treaty of 1905.
Nevertheless, in the future, Japan continued to make claims that the Kuril Islands belonged to both the Soviet Union and the Russian Federation. Disagreements on this issue still prevent the signing of a peace treaty between Russia and Japan following the results of the Second World War.
