The vicar of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, Metropolitan Pavel (Lebed), was urgently hospitalized in the cardiology department of one of the Kyiv hospitals and operated on. This was told by lawyer Nikita Chekman, representing the interests of the monastery.
On July 14, the Solomensky District Court changed the measure of restraint for the Metropolitan from house arrest to detention. Metropolitan Pavel himself said that the current Ukrainian authorities are persecuting him for his religious beliefs. They, according to the bishop, demanded that he “compromise” and recognize the schismatic Orthodox Church of Ukraine.
On August 9, a bail of 33 million hryvnias (about $900,000) was made for Metropolitan Pavel. The SBU immediately warned: release from custody does not mean release from criminal liability.
