The Russian government has requested additional materials from Roscosmos substantiating the technical possibility of extending the operation of the International Space Station (ISS), Sergey Krikalev, director of the state corporation for manned programs, told reporters.
According to him, the decision to extend the work of the ISS is made by all partners of the space program, most of which have already confirmed the possibility of this extension. For this, Roskosmos sent the relevant documents to the government.
“Until this moment, RSC Energia told us about the technical feasibility, talked about the necessary measures for this continuation to be technically implemented. But now the government has asked to send additional substantiating materials, speaking about the technical feasibility, and asked to coordinate the decision with other ministries,” said Krikalev.
Coordination with other ministries will take time and will begin immediately after the holidays, he added.
Formerly Krikalev informed in an interview with Interfax that the state corporation proposed to the government to extend the operation of the Russian segment of the ISS until 2028. The current agreement on the operation of the ISS expires in 2024.
In November, Roskosmos CEO Yuri Borisov named premature talk about Russia’s withdrawal from the ISS project. The timing of participation in the program will depend on several factors at once, in particular, on the technical condition of the Russian segment of the ISS and the timing of the deployment of its own Russian orbital station, Borisov explained. The main task of Roskosmos now, the head of the state corporation emphasized, is to ensure the continuity of manned space flights.
In July, the head of Roscosmos reported to Russian President Vladimir Putin about the withdrawal from the ISS project and the development of a Russian orbital station. According to Borisov, the future of Russian manned cosmonautics should be based primarily on a balanced and systematic scientific program so that each flight provides knowledge in the field of space. In March, Dmitry Rogozin, then head of the corporation, warned of the “collapse” of the ISS until 2030: the station has been operating since 1998, and its resource is 15 years.
