The government has prepared amendments to mitigate liability for tax crimes

On February 20, the Government Commission on Legislative Activities approved amendments to the Criminal Code aimed at mitigating punishment for tax crimes, a source in the government told Kommersant. The bill obliges the investigator to refuse to initiate a criminal case or to terminate an already initiated one in the event that the entrepreneur pays arrears and penalties. In addition, the terms of prosecution for tax evasion will be reduced: they will actually be equated to the terms of storage of reporting documentation.
The government is expected to approve the draft law at the next meeting, which will be held tomorrow, February 22. After that, the document will be submitted to the State Duma. The explanatory note to the project states that it was developed in pursuance of the presidential order issued in April 2022. According to a Kommersant source in the government, the development of the amendments was delayed due to disagreements between the Ministry of Justice, on the one hand, and the Ministry of Finance and the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, on the other.
