The Russian government has prepared a bill on the inclusion of two regions of Ugra – Berezovsky and Beloyarsky – into the Arctic zone. They clarified that in terms of geographical and natural-climatic characteristics they are similar to the territories of the macroregion.
“Expanding the boundaries of the Arctic zone will give additional impetus to the development of the economy and social sphere. The quality and standard of living of citizens of these regions will increase,” said Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, quoted by the government press service as saying Telegram channel.
Mr. Mishustin added that the region has investment potential in the mining and processing industries, as well as in timber processing, energy and tourism.
The government clarified that the Berezovsky and Beloyarsky districts of Yugra meet the criteria of the Arctic development strategy. Among them are the expansion of knowledge-intensive industries, the development of geological research, the development of new mineral deposits, as well as the preservation and popularization of the cultural heritage and languages of small peoples.
The Arctic zone already includes the Murmansk region, the Yamalo-Nenets, Chukotka and Nenets autonomous okrugs, as well as parts of Karelia, Komi, Yakutia, the Krasnoyarsk Territory and the Arkhangelsk region. In 2020, the Russian authorities adopted a program for the development of the Arctic until 2024. The region has a special economic regime for private investment.
