The government has determined the October quotas for the import of seeds from unfriendly countries

The Russian government has approved a list of seeds, the import of which from unfriendly countries may be restricted from October 1 to December 31, 2023. The list, in particular, includes seeds of potatoes, wheat, rye and barley, follows from the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers, published on official portal of legal information.

The list also includes corn, soybean, rapeseed, sunflower and sugar beet seeds. It follows from the resolution that the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation will be able to distribute the volume of quotas for the import of designated categories of seeds and determine the rules for their distribution.

Russian authorities back in October 2022 called dependence on imported seeds is one of the key problems of the Russian agricultural industry. Minister of Agriculture Dmitry Patrushev in an interview with Kommersant saidthat the authorities plan to “progressively and carefully” reduce seed import quotas over the next three years as domestic seed production increases.

That the idea of ​​quoting the import of seeds discussed in the government, on June 14, said Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Victoria Abramchenko. She noted that the threshold values ​​of the Food Safety Doctrine in 75% of Russian seeds “should be achieved.” In her opinion, Russian seeds will ensure the food security of the country.
