The German government has decided to temporarily reduce VAT on gas consumption from 19% to 7%. This was stated by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at a press conference in Berlin.
“The government today decided to reduce VAT on gas use to 7% for a certain period,” said Scholz (quote according to RIA Novosti). He noted that the reduced rate will be valid until March 31, 2024.
According to the chancellor, in the near future the government will take new measures to support citizens and businesses in the energy crisis. Scholz stressed that the main task remains to preserve the unity of the country in difficult economic conditions.
The decision to reduce VAT on gas consumption was made against the backdrop of the introduction of an additional utility fee for electricity. From October 1 this year, residents of Germany will have to pay it for a year and a half (until the end of March 2024). The fee will be 2.419 cents per kWh. Thus, additional gas expenses for an average family of four will be about 480 euros per year, excluding VAT.
