The German Foreign Ministry called the issue of reparations to Poland “closed”

Germany, regarding the issue of reparations to Poland for the Second World War, adheres to its unchanged positions – this issue is “closed” for it, writes “RIA Novosti” with reference to the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany.

“The position of the federal government is unchanged, the issue of reparations is closed. Poland refused further reparations a long time ago, in 1953, and repeatedly confirmed this refusal. This is a necessary basis for today’s European order,” the Foreign Ministry spokesman said. Despite this, Germany continues to bear the moral and political responsibility for the outbreak of this war, the source added.

Earlier today, the head of Poland’s ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, Jarosław Kaczynski, said that Poland would require Germany to pay 6.2 trillion złoty (about $1.3 trillion) in reparations due to World War II.

Poland had demanded the payment of reparations from Germany before. So, in early July, Kaczynski announced that the republic would demand the payment of reparations. July 13 Prime Minister of the Republic Mateusz Morawiecki informedthat the Polish authorities have prepared a report with documents and calculations, on the basis of which the republic will seek reparations from Germany. The report, he said, would be drawn up on scientifically reliable methods of calculation, it would be able to show the losses of that time in terms of current funds.

Following the results of the Potsdam Conference in 1945, the USSR and Poland agreed that the latter would receive reparations from the share of the USSR, which, in turn, would collect them from the eastern zone of Germany. In 1954, an agreement was concluded between Poland and the USSR, according to which both countries renounced claims to the “fraternal” GDR. In 2017, a special commission of the Polish Sejm on reparations appreciated damage of $48.8 billion. After that, the amount was adjusted several times.
