The German Defense Minister warned of a $6 billion “hole” in the Bundeswehr budget.

The Bundeswehr’s budget deficit next year will be around 6 billion euros. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius told the rest of the government about this. The Bild newspaper clarifies that it is doubtful that NATO will reach the target of 2 percent of gross domestic product for military spending.

According to the publication, the Ministry of Finance previously earmarked 52 billion euros for military needs for 2025. The situation with the lack of funds for defense spending, according to experts, will only get worse, as the number of projects for which there is no money is growing. About 700 million euros are not enough to reconstruct the airfield in Büchel for American F-35 fighters. The costs of creating a base in Lithuania, which are estimated at 5 billion, have not yet even been included in budget planning.

According to Bild, information about the difficult financial situation of the Bundeswehr was brought to the attention of the German Chancellor. Now the Ministry of Finance, together with the Ministry of Defense, is trying to find resources, but so far without success.

The newspaper clarifies that the economic situation is depressing now – throughout the country as a whole. Germany’s budget deficit in 2025 could reach a record 25 billion.
