If Russian tourists do not come to Georgia, the country’s economy will lose $1 billion, said Irakli Kobakhidze, head of the ruling Georgian Dream (GM) party, commenting at a special briefing on an opposition rally against visit to Batumi Russian cruise ship Astoria Grande. Mr. Kobakhidze called “incomprehensible” the statement of US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan, who unequivocally supported the opposition action in Batumi. “Not a single ambassador has the right to speak on behalf of the Georgian people,” Irakli Kobakhidze emphasized. “The absolute majority of Georgian society is set differently, and when you (ambassador— “b”) make such statements about the loss of a billion dollars by Georgia, this is incomprehensible,” Kobakhidze said.
According to the head of the ruling party, “150 nationalists who staged a provocation in the port of Batumi do not express the opinion of the Georgian people.”
Yesterday, July 31, the country’s opposition staged protests over the second arrival of the Astoria Grande cruise liner in Batumi in a few days. Police arrested 23 activists, after which opponents of the authorities threatened to continue the protests and promised to force the ruling Georgian Dream party to introduce a visa regime for Russian citizens.
