Five- and ten-ruble banknotes may return to circulation next year, said the general director of Goznak, Arkady Trachuk. He admitted that in 2023 it will be possible “to see banknotes of low denominations in a larger volume.” Mr. Trachuk avoided answering the question whether such banknotes are already being printed.
“It is not customary to say what we are doing at this moment. I can only say that we have annual contracts with the Bank of Russia and the contract for 2022 has actually been fulfilled. Now there is a discussion of the contract for 2023,” he said in an interview with the newspaper. “News”.
According to the general director of Goznak, the most difficult thing was the issue of a five-ruble bill, because it was printed only once – in 1997. “I had to raise all the technical documentation, approach the issue as if it were a new product,” he explained. Arkady Trachuk added that banknotes of low denominations are not intended for large settlements and storage, because they “will be circulated mainly locally.”
The issue of ten-ruble banknotes of the 1997 sample was discontinued in 2013, five-ruble notes – in 1998. In July, the Central Bank (CB) informed, which may resume the issuance of these banknotes at the end of 2022. The Central Bank expects that their return will reduce the cost of producing cash.
