Deputies of the City Council of Belgorod today, January 17, elected the first deputy head of the city administration Valentin Demidov to the post of mayor. Former mayor Anton Ivanov gone retired last fall.
33 out of 36 deputies voted for Mr. Demidov’s candidacy. His rivals were the directors of City-Bel LLC and GradService LLC Vladimir Byvshev and Evgeny Soshenko. One deputy voted for the latter, two ballots were declared invalid.
Presenting his program to the deputies, Valentin Demidov named the implementation of all social obligations and city projects among the main tasks. In addition, the official intends to maintain the investment climate and intensify work on filling the budget and optimizing spending through more efficient public procurement. Before the vote, the deputies were read a letter from the Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov, who supported the submitted candidacy, noting that Mr. Demidov had experience and the necessary competencies.
Valentin Demidov was born in 1976 in the Lipetsk region. In 2007, he became the head of Armyansk in the north of Crimea (at that time the peninsula was part of Ukraine). In June 2015, the head of the republic, Sergei Aksyonov, appointed Mr. Demidov as Minister of Economic Development of Crimea, but already in December 2016, he resigned of his own free will. In September 2020, the official became deputy head of the administration of Simferopol, and in the spring of 2021 he was elected head of the Crimean capital. However, Valentin Demidov also left this post ahead of schedule, without having worked even a year. Sergei Aksyonov explained the resignation of the mayor by the fact that he “did not achieve the necessary results and admitted a flaw.” Since October 12, 2022, Mr. Demidov has served as First Deputy Head of the Administration of Belgorod.
