Gennady Zhidko served as chief of staff of the Russian Armed Forces in Syria in 2016, and was appointed commander of the Air Defense Forces in 2018. In 2017, he was awarded the title Hero of the Russian Federation.
In 2021, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, in July 2022 he was replaced by Viktor Goremykin. From July 6 to October 5, 2022, Gennady Zhidko again led the troops of the Air Defense Forces. Some media reported that in May 2022 he headed the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine.
