The Foreign Ministry said that the compromise between Serbia and Kosovo “can hardly be called sustainable”

The compromise reached by Serbia and Kosovo on the situation in the north of the unrecognized republic is unstable. Such a statement did Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

“It is possible to overcome the acute phase of the crisis without bloodshed thanks to the constructive steps of the Serbian leadership, which has done everything possible to avoid an open clash. At the same time, the compromise reached under the “firm guarantees” of the West can hardly be called stable,” the official commentary says.

The Foreign Ministry pointed to ignoring the “vital issue for the Serbs” on the creation of the Community of Serbian Municipalities of Kosovo, which should ensure the rights and security of Kosovo Serbs. Zakharova added that until Pristina fulfills this condition, “the situation is doomed to remain just as fragile.”

In addition, the official representative of the Foreign Ministry drew attention to the fact that EU mediation “does not bear fruit”, Pristina still has the opportunity to “increase the anti-Serb course.”

Earlier today, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic declaredthat it was possible to avoid the escalation of the situation in the north of Kosovo. Otherwise, according to him, the conflict could end in a “catastrophe with NATO.” Vučić also admitted that the situation in Kosovo took a lot of energy from him.

Aggravation of the situation in the north of Kosovo occurred on December 10, when the Pristina authorities detained an ethnic Serb, a former policeman Dejan Pantic. He was suspected of attacking the election commission. In response to the actions of Pristina, the Serbian population began to erect barricades, blocking the passage along the highway in several settlements near the checkpoint, and went out to protest.

The EU missions in Kosovo (EULEX) were pulled to the barricades. The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, demanded that the Kosovo Serbs “immediately remove the barricades.” Due to the aggravation of the situation in the region, Vučić convened an emergency meeting of the Security Council of Serbia.

December 26 he ordered bring the armed forces of Serbia to the highest degree of combat readiness, but already on December 29 canceled this is the solution. In addition, the dismantling of the barricades began the day before. Vučić suggested that it would take one to two days. Earlier today it became known that all the barricades were dismantled.
