Moscow sees the Netherlands’ decision to reduce the number of Russian diplomats and suspend the Russian trade mission in Amsterdam as an unfriendly move that aims to further damage relations between the two countries. Russia will take retaliatory measures declared in the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
“We regard the decision of the Dutch Foreign Ministry to radically reduce the number of employees of the Russian Embassy in The Hague and suspend the activities of the Russian Trade Representation in Amsterdam as another unfriendly step aimed at further destroying Russian-Dutch relations,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The Foreign Ministry said that the decision of the Netherlands to suspend the work of the trade mission leads to “dismantling the foundations of trade and economic cooperation” that existed between the countries for a long time.
“The Hague must understand that our bilateral ties, which are already very burdened with problems, will undergo a thorough reformatting,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said. At the end of the message, it is said that Moscow will take retaliatory measures to the above-mentioned decisions of the Dutch side.
Earlier today, the head of the Netherlands Military Intelligence and Security Service informedthat 17 Russian diplomats should leave the country. At the same time, two days ago, Dutch Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra declared about the decision to expel about 10 Russian diplomats from the country. The head of the Foreign Ministry explained his decision by the fact that Russia allegedly sends intelligence officers to the Netherlands as diplomats. Also, according to him, the cabinet of ministers cannot allow more diplomats to work in the Russian embassy in The Hague than in the Dutch embassy in Moscow. They will have to leave the country within two weeks.
February 18 Hoekstra also informed about the decision of the Netherlands to close the Russian trade representation in Amsterdam.
