The information that Russia allegedly had plans “to destabilize the situation in Moldova” is unsubstantiated. About it declared at the Russian Foreign Ministry.

“Such allegations are absolutely unfounded and unsubstantiated. They are built in the spirit of classical techniques that are often used by the United States, other Western countries and Ukraine. <...> We resolutely reject the insinuations about the alleged desire of Russia to “undermine” the situation in the Republic of Moldova. Unlike Western countries and Ukraine, we do not interfere in the internal affairs of Moldova and other countries of the world. Russia does not pose a threat to the security of the Republic of Moldova and stands for the development of mutually beneficial and equal bilateral cooperation,” the statement said.

This statement by the Foreign Ministry was a reaction to the fact that the day before, on February 13, Moldovan President Maia Sandu said that the country’s departments had confirmed the information provided by Ukraine about Russia’s plans to destabilize the situation in the country.

On February 9, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, during a speech at the European Council, said that intelligence intercepted the “Russian plan” to “destroy the democratic order” in Moldova and he handed over these documents to Sandu. In the Kremlin then answeredthat they know nothing about such a plan.

The Foreign Ministry explained that Zelensky made this statement on purpose to “draw Chisinau into a tough confrontation with Russia.” Moldova, however, confirmed this information in order to divert the attention of the country’s residents from internal problems. “Such plans, by the way, are already being implemented, and they are implicated in frankly Russophobic narratives. It is noteworthy that in Moldova itself, many perceived the statement of M. Sandu with distrust and bewilderment,” the diplomatic department stressed. The Russian Foreign Ministry called on the Moldovan authorities to show “state wisdom” and “not succumb to outside provocations.”

In June 2022, the leader of the ruling Action and Solidarity Party in Moldova, Igor Grosu, said that Moldova was ready to join the new EU sanctions against Russia. This happened after receiving the status of a candidate for entry into the European Union.
