The main goal of creating a security zone around the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) is to stop shelling by Ukrainian troops. This statement was made by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova, writes TASS.

“As for the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, the main goal pursued by the creation of that very zone (security. – Ed.) Is guaranteed prevention of shelling of the ZNPP by the armed forces of Ukraine,” Zakharova said.

According to her, shelling can cause a man-made disaster, followed by “unpredictable consequences.” Zakharova stressed that the Ukrainian authorities are confident “of their complete impunity” and Kyiv “cynically ignores” the presence of representatives of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at the ZNPP. According to her, “the illusion that the Ukrainian side will not bear any responsibility” is also created by Western media, which do not condemn the shelling of the station by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

To say that Moscow and Kyiv are close to agreeing on an acceptable agreement on the establishment of a security zone around the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant is untimely, spoke formerly Zakharov. According to her, Moscow and Kyiv are not conducting direct negotiations in this direction, the possible parameters of the declaration are being discussed through the IAEA secretariat.

Russia has controlled the ZNPP since the end of February. In early October, after the Zaporozhye region became part of Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed to take the plant facilities into federal ownership and create the Zaporozhye NPP FSUE to ensure the safety of nuclear facilities.

Russia and Ukraine have repeatedly accused each other of shelling the station. Against the backdrop of the shelling of the ZNPP, the head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, called for an immediate end to the shelling of the plant and stepped up contacts with the Russian and Ukrainian sides in order to agree on the creation of a safe zone around the ZNPP.

Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said earlier that Moscow is also concerned about the situation around the ZNPP. He called on all countries of the world to influence Kyiv so that the Ukrainian military would stop shelling the station.
