Relations between Russia and the US are at an extremely low level, but Washington is interested in keeping its embassy in Moscow open, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin said.

According to him, there are a lot of problems in bilateral contacts, and relations between the two states “are at an extremely low, if not zero, level.”

“I can tell you that the Americans are interested in maintaining the functioning of their embassy in Moscow,” said Vershinin (quote from RIA Novosti).

Moscow works with the United States on the basis of the principle of full reciprocity and, as the deputy foreign minister noted, “if any unfriendly actions are taken against the Russian Federation on a bilateral basis, the American side will immediately receive exactly the same reaction.”

On April 27, a senior US embassy diplomat was handed a note of protest over the refusal to issue visas to Russian journalists to cover UN Security Council meetings in New York. The name of the diplomat summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry has not been specified. The Russian Foreign Ministry called the actions of the American diplomatic mission provocative and accused of disrupting the visa processing of journalists.

In addition, in connection with the refusal of the United States to issue visas to Russian journalists, the Foreign Ministry rejected the request of the American side to visit the correspondent of The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) Evan Gershkovich, who is accused of espionage.

That Russia currently has no special relationship with the United States, previously stated Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov following the talks in Havana. The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the United States had declared a “crusade” against Russia.
