The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs commented on a number of statements by the head of EU diplomacy Josep Borrell, releasing an article entitled “Debunking the myths spread by the leadership of the European Union. An anthology of lies. The Russian side decided to “clarify” the issues related to the unfavorable situation in the world in the field of food security, reported at the Foreign Ministry.
Eight “myths” are cited in the publication of the Foreign Ministry. In particular, the European Union claimed that Russia, “by attacking one of the largest grain exporters, especially to Africa, provoked a sharp jump in global food prices.”
According to the Foreign Ministry, the “shock wave” that Borrell spoke of was provoked long before the Ukrainian crisis. The agency cites the “incorrect financial and economic policy of the West and its ill-conceived line of forcing a green energy transition amid the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic” as the reason. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the estimates of the potential of Ukrainian agriculture overestimated: Russia’s share in the world wheat market is 20%, and Ukraine’s is less than 5%, the ministry emphasizes.
The Russian side also commented on Borrell’s statements about sanctions, the organization of “corridors of solidarity” by the EU for the export of Ukrainian grain by land, accusations of destroying and mining farmland and shelling granaries, and other theses.
In March, the Foreign Ministry already published on its website five statements made by European officials and Moscow’s responses to them. Then the ministry also considered the statements of EU representatives on sanctions and the situation with food and energy in the world.
