The Foreign Ministry announced the calls of the West and Kyiv to Georgia to open a “second front”

There are calls from Western countries and Ukraine for Georgia to open a “second front” against Russia, Denis Gonchar, director of the fourth department of the CIS countries of the Russian Foreign Ministry, told TASS, answering a question about the relevance of the format of the Geneva discussions on the Transcaucasus.

“The imperativeness of regular contacts between official representatives of Tbilisi, Sukhum and Tskhinval becomes apparent against the backdrop of provocative calls from Kiev and individual Western capitals for the Georgian authorities to open a “second front” against Russia in Abkhazia and South Ossetia,” — said Potter.

According to him, issues of developing an agreement on the non-use of force by Georgia against Abkhazia and South Ossetia, as well as the delimitation of the Georgian-Abkhazian and Georgian-South Ossetian state borders and their subsequent demarcation, are becoming a priority. The diplomat also pointed out that the co-chairs of the Geneva discussions from the UN, the OSCE and the European Union decided to “pause the discussions” until February 2023, and decisions on this were made behind the scenes. This year, only one round of meetings took place instead of the usual four, Honchar added.

“Despite the lack of clear explanations, we clearly see the true background of what is happening: our colleagues from Washington and Brussels have been tempted to bring geopolitics to the Transcaucasian direction,” said the head of the Foreign Ministry department.

Earlier, the deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Fyodor Venislavsky, said that the Georgian people have a unique opportunity to force the authorities to “take concrete steps and liberate Abkhazia and South Ossetia,” since Russia is now completely focused on Ukraine. Chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party Irakli Kobakhidze declaredthat the leadership of Georgia, after calls to open a “second front” against Russia, can organize a referendum to find out the position of the population. According to him, the country’s leadership does not support this idea. Kobakhidze noted that high-ranking officials of the Ukrainian government “cannot hide their desire” to open a “second front” in Georgia and involve the country in a military conflict.
