The Foreign Ministry allowed the question of compensation for damage for the undermining of the “Nord Streams”

Russia may demand compensation for damages for undermining the Nord Streams. Such a statement did Director of the Department of Economic Cooperation of the Russian Foreign Ministry Dmitry Birichevsky in an interview with RIA Novosti.

“We do not rule out subsequently raising the issue of compensation for damage as a result of the explosion of the Nord Stream gas pipelines,” he said.

The Permanent Mission of Russia to the UN circulated a draft resolution of the Security Council of the organization on an independent international investigation into the incident in the Baltic Sea, Birichevsky recalled. According to him, “Western countries are actively sabotaging the work on the draft resolution,” but Russia will insist on an investigation with the participation of the Russian side.

The incident at Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 occurred on the night of September 26, 2022. Pressure dropped in both pipelines. Two subsequently discovered leaks were in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Sweden, and two more were in the Danish EEZ.

A month later, The New York Times reported about the emergence of new US intelligence, which refers to the involvement of a certain “pro-Ukrainian group” in sabotage on the Nord Streams. At the same time, the German Zeit, citing the German investigation, stated that a Ukrainian ship, on which traces of explosives were found, could be involved in the sabotage.

The Kremlin doubted the involvement of pro-Ukrainian forces in undermining the Nord Streams and called such messages are “coordinated stuffing”. Earlier, the Russian authorities have repeatedly called for an international investigation of the incident with the participation of Russian representatives and pointed to the West’s unwillingness to transparently investigate the gas pipelines case. March 24 Denmark invited operating company Nord Stream 2 AG to take part in the operation to extract the object found near Nord Stream 2. In the Kremlin, such a decision appreciated positively.
