Anti-Russian sanctions will last for many years, the Kremlin said, commenting on the White House’s intention to halve Russia’s income from raw material exports. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky announced plans to begin large-scale construction of fortifications in the country. He also admitted that “some voices” in the West are advising him to open negotiations with Moscow. Kommersant FM political commentator Dmitry Drize believes that the conflict in Ukraine is dragging on.
US Assistant Secretary of State Geoffrey Pyatt announced America’s plans to halve Russia’s income from energy exports by 2030. According to him, Washington promises to do everything possible for this. The media published various options, for example, creating problems for tankers carrying Russian raw materials.
Actually, the process is already underway. According to the Accounts Chamber, in the first nine months of 2023, the share of oil and gas revenues in the federal budget fell to a 16-year low and slightly exceeded 28% of all revenues. True, sanctions are practically not mentioned among the reasons for this state of affairs.
However, this is not entirely what we are talking about. Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the sanctions will last for a long time, and this has long been no secret. However, the country is ready for this – everything is taken into account in planning for the future. We’re already used to living with this – we’ll come up with new ways to get around it.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, in another interview – this time with The Associated Press – began, in fact, to sum up the results of the year. From all that has been said, it is worth highlighting the plan for the construction of fortifications in the country. The head of state has recently expressed strong dissatisfaction with this matter. It can be assumed that Zelensky responded to criticism in this way. Or maybe everything was planned before.
Be that as it may, Vladimir Aleksandrovich said that he hears voices from the West about the desirability of negotiations with the Russian Federation. As a consequence of the fact that the Ukrainian counter-offensive was not successful. According to him, it’s actually not that bad. The main thing is not to lose, but that doesn’t exist yet.
The Middle East is now the center of attention of the whole world, and this is affecting the Ukrainian situation.
What is all this for? The forecast for the new leap year 2024, apparently, does not bode well. The military campaign continues. And it will probably be protracted and even positional in nature. Against this background, former Western partners still want to make their sanctions work effectively. They will put pressure on the post-Soviet space, and on Turkey, and on other countries that help develop parallel imports, let’s call it that.
On the issue of negotiations. It is logical to pay attention to how many countries are involved in the Middle East process. Almost the entire region, plus the USA, India, China and others have abandoned the climate and other toys – it is important for them to find a solution. And in Ukraine, the mediators tried, tried to come up with something like that, but abandoned it. So, either Russia and Ukraine should seek a peaceful solution themselves, or everything will remain as it is. The answer is obvious. The military scenario is still not exhausted.
And the second aspect: Russia is increasingly left alone with itself. It’s not like there’s a fortress under siege – there seem to be allies and partners, but with friends everything is not at all easy. Loneliness as a state of mind – this is the scenario that suggests itself. It may be good to create your own inner world. Yes, definitely good. Only ideas on this matter are still scarce. Clearly, work needs to be done. Otherwise, in the end, only bans are obtained.
