The Finnish government issued a resolution on the North Atlantic Treaty, NATO’s founding treaty. About it informed press service of the Cabinet of Ministers of the country.

“The Decree brings into force the North Atlantic Treaty, as amended by the protocols of accession, and the law for the implementation of provisions subject to the legislation of the said treaty,” the statement said.

The agreement adopted by the Finnish Cabinet completes the process of approval of the country’s membership in NATO and is integrated into Finnish legislation.

Finland entered to NATO on 4 April. Then Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto signed a document on the republic’s entry into the alliance. Finnish President Sauli Niiniste and Finnish Defense Minister Antti Kaikkonen also took part in the ceremony.

On the same day, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov declaredthat Finland’s entry into the North Atlantic bloc leads to an aggravation of the situation in the world. Moscow considers the expansion of the alliance an encroachment on the security and national interests of the Russian Federation, he stressed. Peskov added that such steps are forcing Russia to take measures to ensure the country’s security.

At the same time, Peskov noted that the case with Finland differs from the situation with Ukraine “radically.” According to him, there have never been disputes between Moscow and Helsinki and Finland has never become “anti-Russia”.

Sweden and Finland applied for NATO membership simultaneously on May 18, 2022. Until recently, Turkey and Hungary remained the two countries that did not ratify Finland’s application. Budapest did it on March 27, and Ankara on the night of March 31. The Finnish Parliament approved the law on the country’s accession to NATO on March 1. On the 23rd of the same month, the laws were signed by the president of the republic, completing the process of approving membership in the alliance within the republic.
