The Federation Council approved the application of the senator from the Vologda region Olga Danilova for early resignation. The decision was made at a meeting of the chamber.
Danilova was appointed to the post on September 26 by Governor Oleg Kuvshinnikov, who resigned on October 31.
As previously stated by the acting head of the region, Georgy Filimonov, Kuvshinnikov will be appointed as the new senator from the Vologda region. Last week, Filimonov said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had instructed him to appoint Kuvshinnikov as a new senator.
Danilova is the former governor’s commissioner for protecting the rights of veterans and pensioners. She became a senator after the death of Elena Avdeeva, who represented the region in the upper house. Danilova’s tenure in the Federation Council became the shortest in the history of the upper house of parliament, Vyacheslav Timchenko, chairman of the Rules Committee, told Vedomosti. Her term of office was 44 days.
Political scientist Alexander Kynev told Vedomosti reports that the appointment of a former governor as a senator is a fairly common and fairly widespread practice. At the same time, according to him, “very often this is for one convocation: few are delayed.”
