Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission decided prohibit the export from the customs territory of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) of certain species of mammals of the cetacean order, according to the EEC website. This measure will avoid a repeat of the story of the “whale prison” that occurred in 2018.
Director of the EEC Customs Regulation Department Vahagn Ghazaryan explained that now the export of such animals is allowed upon receipt of a certificate by the authorized body of the Member State of the Union, but this procedure does not ensure proper control over the safety of these species.
“The Commission promptly responds to existing challenges and takes steps aimed, among other things, at protecting the environment and preserving the population of rare animal species in the EAEU countries. In this case, we are talking about whales, dolphins and porpoises,” he said.
The EEC explained that this decision will prevent a repetition of the situation with the emergence of a “whale prison”, as happened in 2018. At that time, about a hundred killer whales and beluga whales were caught in the Sea of Okhotsk, placing them in the enclosures of Srednyaya Bay. Story received a wide public outcry, and the FSB opened administrative cases against companies that organized a “whale prison”. The animals were later released into the sea.
The EAEU includes Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
