The European Parliament decided to deprive Hungary of the EU presidency

The European Parliament has prepared a draft resolution on depriving Hungary of the right to chair the EU, which should pass to the country in the second half of 2024. On Wednesday, May 24, said the Hungarian Minister of Justice Judit Varga.
According to Varga, next week the European Parliament plans to vote on this document. However, the head of the Hungarian Ministry of Justice assured that “we will not allow them to take away such an opportunity from Hungary.”
The minister recalled that the European Parliament’s competence does not include decisions on the presidency of the European Union – this is the responsibility of the EU Council.
Relations between Hungary and other EU members escalated sharply after Budapest’s decision to block tranches of military aid to Ukraine from the European Peace Fund. The Hungarian authorities explained this by the unfriendly actions of Kiev: in Ukraine they imposed sanctions on the Hungarian OTP Bank, accusing it of financing hostilities only because the financial institution continued to work in Russia.
Against this background, the EU authorities were worried about the fate of a new package of anti-Russian sanctions – the integration association is preparing the eleventh package of restrictions, but they fear that Hungary is blocking its adoption due to disagreements with Kiev.
To avoid this, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, proposed voting for a new sanctions package by a simple qualified majority, and not by the principle of a veto, in which one “against” vote would be enough to block the adoption of restrictions.
