European Parliament supported Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act by majority vote. For the approval of the law, agreed upon in December last year, 523 parliamentarians spoke, 46 were against, and 49 abstained. Thus, the EU has officially adopted the world’s first law regulating the development and use of AI.
The law classifies all AI-based systems and tools according to their level of risk, ranging from low to unacceptable. It includes a ban on the use of facial recognition and other “remote biometric identification” systems in real time in public places, as well as emotion recognition systems. It will also be prohibited for the police to use predictive analytics systems to prevent crime, etc. In addition, the law quite strictly regulates generative AI (such as ChatGPT) and “high-risk AI-based systems,” including self-driving cars and medical equipment.
“Europe is now the global standard-setter in the field of artificial intelligence,” wrote Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for the Internal Market, in X.
