State Duma deputies explained the extension of the labeling period for foreign alcohol by geopolitics

State Duma deputies in the final, third reading approved the law, which extends the experiment on labeling foreign alcohol until May 31, 2026. The authors of the initiative cited the difficult geopolitical and economic situation as the reason for this decision.

The initial dates of the experiment are from June 1, 2021 to May 31, 2024. The authors of the initiative should from the explanatory note, they fear that the economic and geopolitical situation carries the risk of a labeling ban by unfriendly countries.

Before the “pilot”, labeling of imported alcohol was allowed only before import into Russia – in factories or warehouses. This increased the risks of importers in logistics and cargo insurance, since there was a possibility of labeling failure in Western countries.

As of June 30, 2023, the labeling experiment was carried out in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Vladimir, Bryansk, Kaliningrad, Leningrad, Moscow and Smolensk regions, Krasnodar Territory and Tatarstan. It involved 16 customs warehouses, 13 temporary storage and 97 alcohol importers.
