Members of the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for the creation of an international special tribunal to investigate Russian “aggression against Ukraine” by a majority of votes.
The document, which is advisory in nature, states that Russia launched aggression against Ukraine back in 2014, resuming it with renewed vigor in February 2022, which was “the most outrageous act of aggression” that the political leadership of Russia and the USSR carried out in Europe since 1945
The exact composition and working methods of such a tribunal have yet to be determined, the document says.
On November 30, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, took the initiative to create an international anti-Russian tribunal for Ukraine under the auspices of the UN. She also suggested creating a structure to manage frozen Russian assets.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin then said that this idea is an attempt by the EU to hide its involvement in war crimes in Ukraine. According to him, Moscow was not surprised by such an initiative to create an international tribunal by the EU. At the same time, he stressed that the creation of such an organization for the investigation without the participation of Russia would be “legal nonsense.”
