The EU will increase the share of renewable energy to 42-45%

Today, March 30, EU authorities reached preliminary agreement to increase the share of renewable energy sources (RES) in total energy production. Representatives of the Council of the EU and the European Parliament agreed that by 2030 the share of RES will reach 42.5% with a possible increase to 45%, while previously the target was 32%. RES include hydropower, nuclear, solar and wind power, as well as energy generation from biofuels.
As part of the agreement to increase the use of renewable energy sources and reduce energy dependence on Russia, the EU authorities agreed to simplify bureaucratic procedures for creating new energy generation projects from renewable energy sources, tighten requirements for industrial enterprises to use more energy from renewable energy sources, and encourage the transport industry to use biofuels more actively.
In 2022, the EU received 22% of its total energy from RES. However, according to Reuters, this share is very different depending on the EU country. For example, in Sweden the share of RES in the total volume is already 63%, while in Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands and Ireland it is only 13%.
