The EU intends to consider a project that involves the introduction of joint maritime patrols to combat Russian “spy ships” and protect energy infrastructure at sea. This is reported by the Financial Times with reference to the updated EU maritime strategy.
According to European Commissioner for the Environment Virginijus Sinkevičius, the EU needs to strengthen the monitoring and protection of critical maritime infrastructure and ships, both from physical and cyber threats.
It is known that the updated strategy implies an increase in the number of military and coastal patrols, as well as an increase in their interaction.
The EU believes that these measures, the annual maritime exercises, will be able to prevent incidents similar to sabotage on the Russian Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines.
