The EU froze €28 billion of private assets of the Russian Federation and Belarus – Kommersant

The European Union (EU) countries have already frozen about €28 billion of private assets of businessmen and companies from Russia and Belarus, RIA Novosti reports, citing a source in the European Commission. The agency’s interlocutor added that the EU wants to use these funds to support Ukraine.
According to the document of the European Commission, with which got acquainted Financial Times newspaper, last year about €260 billion ($284 billion) of the Russian Central Bank’s assets were located in the G7 countries, the EU and Australia. The bulk of this amount – about €210 billion – was in the EU. In total, about $300 billion is frozen.
In early December, Politico reportedthat the EU did not support the idea of transferring profits from Russian assets to Ukraine. Financial Times wrotethat the EC plans to collect up to €15 billion ($16.4 billion) for Ukraine from income from the assets of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation. According to the publication, the United States offer transfer the frozen assets of the Russian Federation to Ukraine in tranches through the World Bank or the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
