The EU admitted that it does not understand Orban’s plan for Ukraine

The EU says it does not know what exactly Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban wants to achieve by blocking Ukraine’s path to EU membership, as well as financial support for the country. A high-ranking European diplomat told reporters about this on the eve of the European Council summit, which will take place in Brussels on December 14-15, Interfax-Ukraine reports.
“What does Orban want? This is a very good question. I would like to know. But I think the basis is letters. If you read Orbán’s letters carefully, you will see that this is what is needed and what is possible or not. The discussion continues. I think that in the hall (of the European Council meeting – Ed.) we will see what is possible. Previously it was a minority issue, now it has become more geopolitical. Whether this will change we will have to see. We are in constant contact with the Hungarian delegation, trying to find a solution and get a positive result, and we will continue this work until the end of the European Council,” he said.
The journalists’ interlocutor stated that in order to make decisions related to expansion, there must be the consent of all 27 member states.
“If we talk about expansion, we need unanimity. If we continue in the EU with 27 member states, this is unanimity,” he emphasized.
At the same time, if the issue of funding is blocked, the diplomat did not rule out continuing support for Ukraine on a bilateral basis.
“If we are talking about money, then we can talk. The budget is our resource, but there are also national contributions,” he explained.
