Estonian Interior Minister Lauri Läänemets accused Russia of allowing refugees to the border points with the republic.
“Refugees who do not have the right to enter the Schengen area are sent to border points. Russia should not allow people into Europe who do not have a visa or any other legal basis,” the minister said (quote according to ERR).
Läänemets called this a “hybrid attack.” According to him, Estonia “showed extreme vigilance” and refused entry to eight Somali citizens on the morning of November 16. The minister admitted that the answer could be the closure of some border points with Russia.
Formerly Prime Minister of Finland Petteri Orpo reported about the intention to close four border crossings with Russia. From November 18, 2023 to February 18, 2024, the points of Vaalimaa (on the Russian side this is the Torfyanovka checkpoint), Nuyamaa (Brusnichnoe), Imatra (Svetogorsk) and Niirala (Vyartsilya) will be closed.
The Finnish authorities cited the worsening situation on the eastern border as the reason for closing the border crossings. In particular, the increasing flow of refugees from Somalia, Yemen, Syria and other countries.
In October, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed a decree terminating the 2012 agreement between Russia and Finland on promoting cross-border cooperation.
