Embassy of Russia in Washington urged The United States should stop accusing Moscow of spreading lies and prove its own non-involvement in the explosions of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines.

“The United States, claiming to be the source of “ultimate truth”, would do well to move from empty accusations against us to the case. At least try to prove your own non-involvement in the destruction of gas pipelines,” the press secretary of the diplomatic mission, Igor Girenko, said in a comment.

Russia qualifies what happened as an act of international terrorism, he recalled, adding that Moscow would not allow the incident, which requires a comprehensive and independent investigation, to be hushed up.

February 8, 85-year-old American journalist, Pulitzer Prize winner Seymour Hersh published investigation of the Nord Stream incident, in which, citing an unnamed source, he announced the involvement in the undermining of the United States and Norway. According to him, during NATO exercises in the summer of 2022, American divers planted explosives under the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines. On September 26 of the same year, a Norwegian naval aircraft dropped a sonar buoy that set off explosives, the journalist concluded.

At the White House called lies and “complete fiction” information about US involvement in the undermining. Later, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the US authorities not only admit their involvement in the explosions, but also “talk about it with pleasure.”

After the investigation, the State Duma Committee on International Affairs introduced for consideration a draft appeal to the UN with a call to investigate incidents on gas pipelines. The text of the appeal also mentions the Hersh investigation. Earlier on February 15, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia trains a special meeting of the UN Security Council, which will discuss the organization of the investigation of explosions on gas pipelines.

The Nord Stream incident occurred on the night of September 26, 2022. Then pressure dropped in both pipelines, and later two leaks were discovered that were located in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of Sweden, and two more in the Danish EEZ. Initially, the three countries agreed to conduct a joint investigation, but later this idea was abandoned. Sweden has already completed an investigation, but those responsible for what happened have not been named.
