“We regard this barbaric Russophobic trick, which received the approval of the top leadership of the republic, as another act of vandalism at the state level, flagrant arbitrariness and desecration of the memory of hundreds of thousands of Soviet soldiers, including Russians, Latvians and representatives of other fraternal peoples,” the message says.
The embassy also demanded that the Latvian authorities immediately stop the persecution “for political and ideological reasons” of those citizens who oppose the dismantling of the monument.
Demolition of the monument to the soldiers of the Soviet army has begun the day before, the area around it was patrolled by the police. At the same time, Russian Ambassador to Latvia Mikhail Vanin said that the diplomatic mission began issuing Russian visas to Latvian citizens who were detained for participating in protests against the demolition of the monument. On May 12, the Parliament of Latvia adopted in the second reading a bill that suspends the agreement between Latvia and Russia on memorial structures and monuments. The bill came into force on May 13, and the suspension of the agreement began on May 16 until Russia withdraws its troops from Ukraine. The next day, the Riga City Council voted to demolish the monument to the Liberators in Riga.
11 August the Saeima of Latvia acknowledged Russia as a country that supports terrorism. In response to this decision, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, stated that “naming ideologists [этого предложения] need none other than neo-Nazis.”
