The Russian Embassy in the United States commented on the publication of the US State Department about the editor-in-chief of the Rossiya Segodnya media group and RT Margarita Simonyan. Diplomats accused the United States of trying to “denigrate” Russian journalists and called for an end to the “harassment.”
“This material is another example of frenzied attempts to denigrate our journalists for their truthful coverage of international events,” says in a message in the Telegram channel of the diplomatic mission.
The embassy believes that it is “hard for the US authorities to hide jealousy” due to the trust of US citizens in the Russian press. Diplomats urged the United States to follow the principles of freedom of speech and pluralism of opinions, as well as “to stop engaging in propaganda campaigns with a priori insignificant results.”
On August 31, an article about Margarita Simonyan appeared on the website of the US State Department. The journalist was called the “face of Kremlin propaganda” and “loyal propagandist” of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and was also accused of disinformation.
After Russia recognized the LPR and DPR, Simonyan fell under EU sanctions. In addition, on March 2, the work of the RT TV channel and the Sputnik agency in the community was banned. Also on March 4, RT America announced the end of content production.
