The EC has prepared decisions to stop the simplified visa regime with Russia

The European Commission has prepared proposals to waive the simplified visa regime with Russia, said European Commissioner for Internal Affairs Ylva Johansson. The decision may come into force on September 12.

“I hope that the Council of the EU will quickly, already this week, approve the proposal, thus, as early as Monday, the usual visa regime will apply to Russia,” quotes Johansson press service of the EC.

If the proposals are accepted, then the Russians will face the following changes:

The European Commission previously gave recommendations to EU member states on the partial suspension of the simplified visa regime for some Russian citizens. This measure is aimed at ensuring that Russian businessmen and officials do not have “privileged” access to the EU.

Brussels hopes that these recommendations will help Member States and their consulates to apply the partial suspension of the agreement, clarify the procedures and conditions for issuing visas to Russian citizens in any EU consular office, and ensure the possibility of issuing visas on humanitarian grounds.
