The EC clarified the mechanism of sanctions regarding personal belongings of Russians

The European Commission gives instructions on the implementation of sanctions against Russia; decisions on the implementation of specific restrictions are made by the states of the European Union. EC representative Daniel Sheridan Ferry stated this at a briefing, commenting on the commission’s explanations on the import of Russian vehicles into the EU countries.

EU countries should not prohibit Russians from importing into the EU personal items that are not of high value and are not luxury items, the EC said in a statement.

“The current sanctions are part of EU legislation. EU states must comply with these sanctions. As for specific actions, specific situations, states are responsible for their implementation, we provide instructions so that they can fulfill their obligations,” added he (quote from RIA Novosti).

On September 8, the EC published an explanation on the import of Russian vehicles into EU countries. According to the document, Russian transport, regardless of whether it is used for private or commercial purposes, can be arrested. In addition to vehicles, Russian citizens are also prohibited from temporarily bringing with them things the import of which from Russia is prohibited to EU countries. The list of restrictions includes suitcases, laptops, smartphones, cosmetics, etc.

Acting Head of the Federal Customs Service (FCS) Ruslan Davydov named the EU ban is “complete lawlessness” and expressed confidence that Russia “will not create such lawlessness” because “we are civilized people, unlike them.” According to Senator Andrei Klishas, ​​only mirror measures will be able to influence the “enraged European bureaucrats” and the abolition of such restrictions, which are “pure discrimination on the basis of a passport.” Against this background, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev statedthat Russia should temporarily suspend diplomatic relations with EU countries.
