The Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots approved the denunciation of the agreement on cooperation with Ukraine in the use of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait. This should from the database of the State Duma.
Denunciation of the agreement, according to the committee, is necessary due to the accession of the DPR, LPR of Zaporozhye and Kherson regions to the Russian Federation. “Ukraine has lost the status of a coastal state in relation to these water areas [Азовского моря и Керченского пролива]it became necessary to terminate the agreement between the Russian Federation and Ukraine,” the conclusion specified.
In addition, the termination of the agreement is explained by the adoption of the same law on the denunciation of the agreement by the Verkhovna Rada at the end of February. On March 25, it officially entered into force in Ukraine. The draft denunciation was submitted by the committee a week ago, on 24 May.
The agreement between Russia and Ukraine on cooperation in the use of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait was signed at the end of 2003 in Kerch. The agreement emphasized the importance of economic development between the two countries and the preservation of the economic and natural complex of water areas.
In December 2022 Ukraine tore apart an agreement with Russia on the joint use and protection of transboundary water bodies, which was signed in 1992 in Kyiv. Then Ukraine also withdrew from the CIS agreement on the implementation of a coordinated policy in the field of determining transport tariffs, concluded in 1997.
