After the destruction of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station in the Kherson region, 46 people died, informed Chairman of the regional government Andrey Alekseenko in his Telegram channel.
“Unfortunately, the death toll has risen to 46,” he wrote.
The official noted that the settlements affected by the disaster are returning to life, and only the settlements of the Golopristan district remain “seriously flooded”. “This is the city itself, as well as Kokhani, all 3 Kardashinki, the area of dachas. Here we are still continuing to evacuate people by watercraft,” he explained.
Specialists are completing work on restoring power supply to infrastructure facilities, as well as collecting dead animals – 1,800 heads have already been taken out.
The breakthrough of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station occurred on the night of June 6. As a result of the incident, 11 out of 28 spans of the station were destroyed, after which an uncontrolled discharge of water began. The water level reached approximately 11 m. The Russian and Ukrainian authorities blame each other for what happened.
Today, June 21, Acting Governor of the Kherson region Volodymyr Saldo announced the return of the Dnieper to its natural banks, but the lower reaches of the river became a zone of ecological disaster as a result of the destruction of the dam.
The total damage to the Kherson region authorities, according to preliminary data, is estimated at 40 billion rubles. Earlier, Saldo said that the restoration of the HPP will take 1.5-2 years and 200 billion rubles. At the same time, it will be possible to begin restoration work only after the end of hostilities, he emphasized.
