The Belarusian side proposed during an emergency meeting of the CSTO Collective Security Council to send Secretary General Stanislav Zas to the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, transmits agency “BelTA”.
“Steps that seem possible to be taken promptly have been proposed. Among them is the departure of the CSTO Secretary General to the conflict zone to prepare a detailed report to the heads of state,” the agency said.
Minsk also proposed creating a working group from among the employees of the Secretariat and the CSTO Joint Headquarters to analyze the situation and develop proposals.
The aggravation of the conflict on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border occurred on the night of September 13. According to the Armenian side, from midnight Azerbaijan began to conduct intense fire in the direction of settlements in the south-east of the country. According to the Armenian Ministry of Defense, at least 49 people from the republic died as a result of the conflict.
In turn, the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan reported that the reason for the aggravation was “intensive shelling over the past month of the positions of the Azerbaijani army in the Kalbajar, Lachin, Dashkesan and Gedabek directions and large-scale provocations committed today,” and placed all responsibility for what happened on the military leadership of Armenia. Baku later reported the death of 50 of its servicemen.
Baku and Yerevan through the mediation of Moscow were able to agree on the ceasefire regime from 09:00 Moscow time. Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov expressed the Kremlin’s extreme concern over the aggravation of the situation and called on the parties to observe the ceasefire and generally comply with the well-known tripartite statement of the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia of November 2020 and January, November 2021.
