The Sovetsky District Court of Kazan arrested the journalist of Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty (recognized as a foreign agent in the Russian Federation) until December 5, transmits Interfax.
On October 19, Kurmasheva was detained in Tatarstan on suspicion of refusing to submit documents for further inclusion in the register of foreign agents (Part 3 of Article 330.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). The maximum punishment under this article provides for imprisonment for up to two years and a fine of up to 300,000 rubles.
Commenting on the detention, presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov noted that the Kremlin does not follow the details of Kurmasheva’s case and knows nothing about it. Peskov also stressed that in Russia there is “no campaign to persecute US citizens.” “There are US citizens who break the law. Legal measures are taken against them. There is no other campaign. We consider it inappropriate to talk about this,” he added.
Alsou Kurmasheva graduated from Kazan Federal University with a degree in Philology and New York University in Prague with a degree in Business Administration. She has Russian-American citizenship and lives permanently in the Czech Republic with her family. At the end of May she came to Russia for family reasons. Kurmasheva has been working at Radio Liberty since 1998 and holds the position of editor of the Russian-language Internet platform “Idel.Realii” (included in the register of foreign agents).
